Värmskog church is a church with a very interesting history in a beautiful area.
Welcome to Värmskog church!
Värmskog church has a very interesting history. The church congregation in Värmskog decided to build a new church made of stone in 1756. The church architect, Christian Haller, was hired. Haller had previously built Karlstad cathedral and this project made him a leading name within his profession. In 1760 the church build began. Sadly Haller had passed away at this point so his wife Hedvig Haller completed the project. The church was finished in 1763 and on the 18th September that same year the church was consecrated by the provost, Anders Lagerlöf.
On the 27th July 1799 tragedy struck when a fire destroyed the church. This happened when sparks from a fire clearing the ground nearby accidentally ignited in the church tower. The fire couldn't be stopped and it destroyed the interior of the church completely. It wasn't until 1802 that the reforged church bells and new furnishings could be reinstated in the rebuilt church.
In 1947 archaeological excavations to the south of the church bell hill found remains of two earlier churches. One from the 13th century and the later one from the 17th century. Both are visible to this day.
Värmskog church is open all year.
