Peaceful Orchid
The largest of Swedish orchids
Guckusko (Cypripedium calceolus, Venustofflan, ghost shoe) is actually an outsider among the Orchids, but it is very beautiful where it grows in clusters. It has the largest flower of all Swedish orchids and is smelling, as well as one of our orchids that most recalls tropical orchids.
The flowers lack nectar but the "lip" acts as a temporary "prison" for insects that after a while find out, then full of the flower's pollen. Guckusko is a high-growth, powerful orchid with creeping, underground strain. The stem can be almost half a meter high and has three or four leaves. The flowers usually sit alone at the top of the stem. Plantan develops slowly and it can take over ten years before it goes into bloom.
Where is it?
Guckusko is spread from Öster and Västergötland up to Torne Lappmark and on Öland and Gotland. The flower grows in damp herbal forests on lime-rich soil. The species is rare throughout the Swedish range except in the northeast of Uppland and in some areas of Jämtland.
The Swedish name guckusko is already spoken of by Linnaeus, who in "Flora Svecica" writes that they are called guckuskor in the Roslagen, and gucku is also today a dialectal word for ghosts.
Fridlyst
Guckusko is peaceful and appears on the red list of endangered species under the category "relevant". The main threats to guckuscones are collection, caldering and diving.
Visit Guckuskon on Kinnekulle
At Kinnekulle you will find Guckuskon in Hjelmsäter. When you get to Hjelmsäter’s mansion, swing up between the barns on a small gravel road (coming from Blomberg’s direction, turn right and you come from Råbäck’s direction you turn left). A few hundred meters up there is a parking lot on the left side where you can park and then walk into the trail that is on the other side of the road. You are in a nature reserve that is just because Guckuskon is here. Go to the specified explosions during your visit.

You call and order your trip at least 1 hour before the desired departure from the departed time intervals (see times). Travelling with Close traffic costs like a regular single ticket and you can pay both in cash and with a bank card. Senior cards are valid in conjunction with a short inspection in the Close Traffic Service, however, the other period tickets of Västtrafik do not apply.
